Question: Why won't my sprinkler heads pop up?
Answer: Is the pressure inside OK?
If no: The pressure reducer inside your home (usually in the basement) may be adjusted. If you are not sure how to adjust your pressure reducer, your plumber can perform this service for you. If adjusting the Pressure Reducer does not make a difference, make a work order for the Water Crew to check for problems at the service connection. The city is responsible for maintaining only up to the meter.
If yes: The irrigation system was probably designed to a higher flow and/or pressure than you are currently receiving. If a certified Irrigation Contractor installed your system, you may be able to call the contractor to have them adjust the system to support your needs at 40 psi.
Note: Per SJC code Chapter 16.30, an "irrigation contractor" means a person who has been certified by the irrigation association to install irrigation systems.
Question: Why did my sprinkler system seem to work better last year?
Answer: South Jordan City is making changes to the pressure zones within the city for our Culinary Infrastructure Project. Some areas with higher pressures last year may have been adjusted already to the new pressure zones. If the sprinkler system was not designed to 40 psi or at too large of a flow, you will see a difference since last season.
Question: Why is the water pressure changing?
Answer: The water pressures change as pressure zone boundaries are redefined. As water storage tanks are constructed, the pressure zone boundaries are adjusted based on the tank locations. The new pressure zones will improve the overall water system operations and maintenance.
Question: Why can't pressure zones be higher?
Answer: The pressure zones are set by the number and location of storage tanks throughout the City. South Jordan City's zones have been set according to the funds available. Once the culinary infrastructure project is complete, there will be eight pressure zones ranging from 50 psi to 100 psi. Pressures over 100 psi would create problems in the system, and possibly within your home.
Question: When can I irrigate?
Answer: Between the hours of 6:00 pm and 10:00 am every other day at most. Please adjust your watering schedule to every third or fourth day when possible, especially when it rains.
Question: What pressure should the sprinkler system be designed for?
Answer: 40 psi
Question: What flow can I expect for my sprinkling system?
Answer: A measurement can be taken at the hose bib using a well-marked 5-gallon bucket for 20 seconds. Multiply the volume of water in the bucket after 20 seconds (the bucket should show each gallon mark) by three to get the flow in one minute. This will give you a flow in gallons per minute.
