The SJPD is genuinely interested in rewarding above average job performance and in taking the necessary corrective action in any instance where an employee fails to meet our standards.

Provide recognition for an employee whose work is considered worthy of praise.

Make a complaint against an employee who is believed to have behaved inappropriately.

CITIZEN COMMENDATION PROCEDURES

1. To commend or compliment the performance of an SJPD employee, notify an SJPD supervisor;
a. Personally at the SJPD, 1600 West Towne Center Drive during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; or
b. By calling the SJPD administrative telephone number (801) 254-4708; or

2. When a commendation is received verbally, the supervisor will prepare a memo for the Chief of Police advising him of the commendation, so he may take the appropriate steps to notify the involved employee, as well as, corresponding back to the citizen.

Letters of commendation from citizens are posted for all SJPD personnel to view. The SJPD appreciates the effort and consideration of concerned citizens who take the time to commend employee performance.

COMPLAINT PROCEDURE
It is the policy of the South Jordan Police Department to investigate all allegations and complaints of misconduct against any member of the SJPD. Proper adherence to this procedure will clear the innocent and facilitate the prompt and equitable progressive disciplinary policy of this organization.

1. To file a formal complaint against a South Jordan Police Department employee, notification should be given to the SJPD supervisor;

a. Personally at the SJPD, 1600 W. Towne Center Dr., during normal
business hours, Monday-Friday 0:00 AM - 5:00 PM; or
b. By calling the SJPD administrative telephone number (801) 254-4708; or
c. By mailing comments to:

2. Letters or telephone calls can be anonymous. A complaint received by any member of the SJPD is directed to a supervisor immediately.

3. On any anonymous telephone complaints, the supervisor will prepare a memo for the Chief of Police outlining the nature of the complaint and the officer(s) involved so he may begin processing the complaint.

4. If the allegation of misconduct is of a serious nature, the Chief of Police, or his designee (in his absence) will be notified of the complaint as soon as possible. Examples of serious allegations include but are not limited to; complaints of criminal activity, complaints against command personnel, or complaints of excessive use of force.

5. Complaints received concerning employees will be assigned to the Operations Commander in the following instances.

• Complaints of harassment.
• Complaints of discourteous treatment and other demeanor related allegations.
• Violations of lesser rules and regulations of the SJPD, excluding criminal activity.

6. The Chief of Police will be responsible for the investigation of the following types of allegations, to include, but not limited to:
• Complaints involving criminal activity.
• Complaints against command personnel.
• Instances involving the discharge of a fire arm.
• Excessive use of force complaints.

Notification will be made to the complainant informing them of the results of the departmental investigation. If the complainant did not provide an address or phone number, notification cannot be made. In internal affairs types of investigations involving a great amount of time, the Chief of Police will mail a status letter to the complainant advising of the status of the investigation.

CAUTION: Any false, misleading, or untrue statements, or allegations made in relation to employees of the South Jordan Police Department may lead to civil or criminal sanctions.
