Meter and Distribution Pipe Sizing

1. Obtain minimum water static pressure for the location of new construction from South Jordan City water department.
2. Calculate water supply fixture units (w.s.f.u.), per IRC P2903.6 and table P2903.6 for proposed and projected future plumbing fixtures.
3. Use the applicable modifiers in section P2903.7 to adjust water static pressure.
4. Calculate maximum development length of water piping. The actual length of pipe between the source of supply and the most remote fixture.
5. With the information gathered above, use tables P2903.7 to determine meter and distribution pipe sizing.
6. Provide all this information on the plans or on a 8 ½" x 11" sheet.

Example of Meter and Distribution Pipe Sizing

Static Pressure: 65 psi

w.s.f.u: 27

Max. Development length: 100'

Elevation above source: 18', -9 psi

Pressure reducing valve: 80% of static

Equipment loss: -5 psi

65 psi x .8 = 52 psi

52 psi - 14 psi = 38 psi

Meter size = 3/4"

Required Distribution pipe size = 1 1/4"
