UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE MAILBOX PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

In order to provide you with good and safe mail delivery service, compliance with the following requirements is necessary:

1. Group mailboxes at or near property lines between two homes so that boxes are within a few inches of each other. Rural Carriers drive down some streets on only one side of the street so, in those cases boxes may need to be installed across the street from your home. On some private lanes, boxes may all be grouped at.the entrance to the private lane. If you live in a new culdesac where mail delivery has not yet been established, mailboxes will be grouped together just outside of the culdesac, (check your plat map for proper placement in this situation or contact the Post Office Manager if you are unsure).

2. Boxes need to be at least 5 feet from a fire hydrant. When there's a hydrant on the property line group the boxes at least 5 feet away on either property. (There is an easement for this purpose.)

3. The ideal distance from the bottom of the box to the street should be 44 to 46 inches.

4. The front of the box should be flush with the front of the curb. (The only exception to this is if you have rolled curb and gutter.) If you have rolled curb and gutter, contact the Manager at the Post Office.

5. At least 1 inch permanent house numbers need to be displayed on the box so that your mail carrier can see the number on approach to the box. If the mailbox is located on a street other than the one which your home faces, both the house number and street name must be on the box. In all instances, placing the owner's name on the box is optional but very helpful.

6. All mailboxes need a flag. If your flag is missing or if you are building a brick mailbox, flags are available at local hardware stores or through a local company called Beacon Industries at 801-254-1538.

7. For safety sake check to see if your mailbox is securely fastened to the support and that the support is firmly planted in the ground.

8. Keep access to the mailbox clear of items such as snow, vehicles, garbage cans, toys, etc. Mail carriers need to drive up to the box and then drive away without getting out of the vehicle. They are instructed to avoid situations where they need to back up in postal vehicles, we don't want to back up over a pet or especially over a child.
